It starts with a Xhosa version of the Apostles’ creed: a gospel song titled Ndiyakwholwa. A notable recording not just for the sombre beauty of its collective choir, it came from Levi’s mother’s congregation and was the first time in 33 years that they had sang it without her there to lead them. Its placement at the beginning of the cassette is a moment of heart wrenching solemnity, an emotional weight that he spends the subsequent five tracks fighting to pull himself from.
